We regularly go around the country to speak with staff at our practices and find out more about them, news from their area and useful animal health advice. This week we spoke with Ryk Botes who is the Branch Partner at Medivet Chafford Hundred.
Ryk grew up in the northern part of South Africa. It was during the early years of his life on the family farm that he began thinking about working with animals.
Decades of study and working in the veterinary profession has seen him combine his love of animals with a love for surgery to become an orthopaedic expert and respected surgeon.
Ryk moved to the UK in 1998 and has worked with Medivet since 2013. His area of expertise is in orthopaedics including hip replacement; spinal and elbow surgery.
With more than 25 years as a Vet there’s hardly anything he hasn’t seen from a golf ball guzzling dog to a lion that wasn’t as sleepy as it looked.
“I’ll never forget when I was asked to sedate a lion in South Africa who had grown too big for the tracking collar which had been put on him when he was younger. The collar was causing him problems so it needed to come off. He weighed about 250 kilogrammes and I underestimated his size when I sedated him.
“Halfway through the procedure the lion began waking up while I’m next to him. I saw him raise his head wearily but it was enough for me to run like the wind to get to safety.”
Much closer to his practice in Essex, Ryk and his team recently operated on a dog which had swallowed nine of its owner’s golf balls. The dog made a full recovery and is back chasing golf balls again.
Having completed a further degree in the USA Ryk was impressed by Medivet’s professional attitude to veterinary medicine.
He added: “The fact that Medivet has a network of experts across the UK allows us to offer an interdependent service. This means I know I can pick up the phone and speak with colleagues who are experts in different fields such as eyes, cardiology or skin conditions. The result is that Medivet has surpassed all its competitors in its professionalism and standard of service - and the clients reap the benefits.
“We have a fantastic team here with very high standards and professional attitudes but at the same time we strive to enjoy working together in a relaxed atmosphere where we look out for the interests of each other.”
Like many of the vets who work with Medivet, Ryk urges people to take out pet insurance. “Getting your pet insured is wise, especially a life policy. However, it’s also very important to make sure you use a reputable insurance company such as Pet Plan, so as not to get stung by unexpected as policy benefits vary depending on the company you buy them from.”
