Caring For Your New Puppy or Kitten

Congratulations on your new family member! You are about to embark upon a very rewarding experience where you’ll discover just how much fun and joy a furry companion can bring to your life.

Owning a pet is a very gratifying experience but being a pet owner comes with a great deal of responsibility. It can sometimes be difficult to know what your pet needs to lead a healthy life.

We firmly believe that prevention is far better than cure, so to help you get your pet started on the right paws, we’ve created a guide on how to provide your pet with everything they’ll need to lead a long, happy and healthy life with you.

Vaccinations are essential for protecting your pet from a variety of serious (often fatal) illnesses. Pets have a shorter lifespan than people and a lot can change within their body, especially as they get older, even in the space of a year.

We recommend vaccinating your pet against all these illnesses by visiting the vet for an initial vaccination course (this normally involves two, but occasionally three vaccinations).

A booster vaccination will allow your vet to give your pet a full health examination to try and detect any changes at an early age. In this way, they can help maintain your pet’s health by preventing illnesses.

Flea control

Have you ever been bitten by a flea? Then you know how itchy it can be. Fleas can occur when your pets are not appropriately treated with flea control. The itch is produced by the actual bite and the flea’s saliva, which contains anti-blood clotting agents.

The secret to successful flea control is to treat both your pet and the environment with products that kill both adult and immature fleas. A non-prescription product is rarely effective and only a regular flea treatment will prevent a recurrence of the problem – this will keep your pet and your house free from those nasty little insects!

Contact your local Medivet team for more advice on an appropriate flea control product for your pet.

Neutering and spaying

One of the most important health decisions you’ll make for your pet is the decision to have them neutered.

There are so many benefits to neutering your pets aside from the obvious unplanned litter which will need rehoming!

Spaying is the surgical removal of the reproductive organs in females and neutering is the surgical removal of a male’s testicles.

Neutering benefits your pet as it may help them live a longer, happier life. It can also help to reduce or prevent the occurrence of some health problems that could be difficult and/or expensive to treat, such as pyometra – an infection of the uterus. Other benefits include preventing females from coming into heat, reducing some behavioural problems and also preventing males from spaying or marking their territory in unwanted places – like inside your house!

Every dog owner in England will legally have to microchip their pet from 6th April 2016.

Puppies will need to be microchipped and registered to an approved database by the time they are 8 weeks old.

Sadly, over 900 pets a day go missing in the UK, so microchipping your pet means that if your pet goes missing (fingers crossed they don’t!), it can be as simple as giving them a quick scan to identify them if they are found without a collar and taken to a vet or animal rescue centre.

Collars with tags can be lost, or even stolen, but microchipping only needs to be done once in a pet’s lifetime and the chip will never degrade.

Get ahead of the crowd and book your chipping appointment today – use our online practice finder tool to find your local Medivet practice.

Pet insurance

Pet insurance will provide you with the peace of mind to know that, should your pet require emergency treatment, you will receive help towards the costs. A pet insurance policy could help cover unexpected medical expenses should your pet become ill or injured in an accident.

Advances in veterinary medicine means we can do more for your pet but the costs can soon mount up – that’s why we recommend Petplan insurance to all our clients to help cover unexpected veterinary bills.

Save money on your pet’s preventative healthcare needs…

The Medivet Healthcare Plan is a great way to save money on all your pet’s preventative healthcare needs, including annual booster vaccinations, health checks, flea and worm protection and medication – you’ll even receive a free microchip if your pet requires it!

To find out more about the benefits of the Medivet Healthcare Plan, simply use our online practice finder tool to contact your local Medivet practice today.

We hope this guide provides you with a deeper insight into the key things you’ll need to help give your new puppy or kitten the best start in life.

Our friendly teams are always happy to assist you with any queries, so please do not hesitate to contact them should you need further information or advice.

We hope you enjoy a lifetime of happiness with your new furry friend!
