Graduate Support Programme

Graduate Programme

Our Graduate Support Programme

Your first job is an important step towards ensuring a successful and fulfilling career. We recognise the importance of supporting you as an individual. This is why we have a graduate support scheme, The Residency Programme.

Your job satisfaction and clinical excellence is important to us. We know working as a newly graduated veterinary surgeon can be daunting, especially when working in a clinic that consistently practices to the highest standards.

On day one, you might not possess the full range of consulting, medical and surgical skills you need before working independently. Many new graduates prefer a period of time to learn and practice under close, careful and guided supervision.

As a new graduate on The Residency Programme, you will be placed in an experienced partner run practice for an initial period of three to six months. During this time our close supervision and a tailored approach will enable fast track development.

Our experience shows that, within three to six months, you should be able to perform a number of procedures unassisted, including:

  • Neutering
  • Lump removals
  • Treating abscesses
  • Stitch-ups
  • Dentals
  • Taking blood samples
  • Positioning X-rays correctly
  • Taking blood pressure measurements

Of course, we also want you to feel comfortable in the consulting room when communicating with owners.

Our regular and ongoing performance reviews assess your abilities, highlighting areas of strength, as well as those requiring further development. This ensures your learning can be directed to facilitate your timely achievement of comprehensive clinical skills.

Running parallel to this is our very popular “Buddy Programme”. As a new Medivet vet, you will be assigned a buddy (mentor). Their focus is on helping to support your development within the partnership at all levels; this includes clinical ability, communication, familiarity of policies and procedures, and even help in developing a healthy work-life balance.

We also know that, as new graduates, you will come to us full of questions. We have more than 200 vets within Medivet and we all work together as a team to share our knowledge and experience. This means there is always someone you can turn to if there is anything you are unsure about, so you can always feel confident.

Training to suit you

Once you’re ready to move on from the programme you will be placed into a floating role or become a branch assistant, with the support of your buddy. This way you can progress and develop your skills and career within the Medivet family.

Graduate Support Programme benefits package:

  • Competitive salary of £21,000 pa (increasing to £24,000 pa upon successful completion of the programme)
  • Substantial allowance towards housing (this will double upon successful completion of the programme!)
  • A vehicle or an allowance for the duration of the residency (you will still benefit from this upon successful completion of the programme)
  • Generous CPD allowance kicking in straight after
